The best private and secure apps available on iOS and Android

1. Signal

First on this list is an App called Signal, Signal is an app that uses state-of-the-art end-to-end encryption (powered by the open source* Signal Protocol). The app was created by Marlinspike who was a former head of the security team at Twitter. The messaging app has been recommended by various security experts such as Edward Snowden and prominent figures in the technology space such as Jack Dorsey, and Elon Musk and the Canadian Government. One the of the standout, features about this messaging application is that there are no ads, no affiliate marketers, and no creepy tracking either. So, you don’t have to worry about your messages being shared with third-parties or being sold.

It's also worth mentioning that signal is an independent non-profit organization. They’re not tied to any major tech companies and can never be acquired by one either. Development is supported by grants and donations from generous users of the app.

In terms of features, Signal offers, of course messages, video-calls and (recently) stories. You are also capable of creating groups, sending voice messages, photos, videos, GIFs and files for free. Signal uses your phone's data connection so you can avoid SMS and MMS fees if you decided to message friends or family outside of your country of origin.

2. Proton Mail, Proton VPN, Calendar & Drive  

If you are looking for an EXTRA secure email services, Proton Mail is the way to go. Proton Mail is a private email service that uses open source, independently audited end-to-end encryption and zero-access encryption to secure your email messages.

In addition to all the encryption the Proton company is incorporated and headquartered in Switzerland. This means all your data is protected by strict Swiss privacy laws and Swiss neutrality. Similar to the Signal messaging application Proton does put people first (not advertisers) hence your data belongs to you.

Proton Mail offers a free account with limited features such as 1 giga bite of storage, 1 email address, and 150 message per day.  Security features include the ability to send password encrypted emails even to people that doesn’t use Proton Email and hide your IP address. It’s worth mentioning that Proton Mail is trusted by many journalists, security experts, and millions of people around the world.

The company behind Proton Mail also offers various other products, which include online cloud Drive, VPN and Calendar, which share many feature the same security as email.

3. Brave

Now for the last app, Brave is a browse available on a plethora of devices including iOS and Android. The Brave Brower is built off the open-source Chromium Web core, which powers many browsers used by billions of people worldwide such as Chrome and Microsoft Edge. It also has many exciting features such as crypto wallet capabilities on the browser, unlimited, private video calls, right in your browser, with no extra apps, and no tracking (best part it’s free). Also, on the main page of the browser you are provided with a summary of trackers and Ads, blocked, bandwidth saved, and time saved.

 Unlike other browsers, the Brave Brower blocks invasive ads, cross-site tracking, cookies, fingerprinting and includes malware and phishing protection, protections against bounce tracking and anonymized network routing (Tor Mode). You also do have the option to enable tracking and advertisement if your heart desires.

 They also have and interesting system called Brave Rewards, where you can earn tokens just for browsing and then use these tokens for almost anything: cash gift cards, crypto, tip to websites & content creators you love and much more.
